Lot 16Mr. Gautama Siddhatha as an ascetic practitioner
Ming Dynasty, 17th Century
16cm long x 10cm wide x 22cm high
16cm long x 10cm wide x 22cm high
Valued at S$14,000
This is an invaluable piece adding on to the Buddha story as it features Siddhatha's choice to ascetic practices which resulted in His heavy fasting and living in extremely harsh conditions. As a result, as you can see from the artifact, His thin and frail body (can even outline his ribs), and wallow but serene face.
This is a rare piece, as China seldom feature Buddha in His emaciated mode. Perhaps due to Chinese culture of associating prosperity and good fortune with fleshy and plumpness of the body, ascetic Buddha sculptures are relatively rare in China.
You can find this new piece under the story panel 8, under "Practicing Ascetism".

Lot 2
Mr. Maitreya, standing upon pedestral
18th Century China-Tibet
10cm long x 7cm wide x 24cm high
Valued at S$36,000
Valued at S$36,000
This exquisite gilt-bronze piece of the standing Buddha Maitreya is the typical depiction of the Tibetan style. The delicate details of the crown, the cascading robe and serene facial expressions are simply a pleasure to appreciate at.
You'll find this in front of the first panel at the Maitreya section, just beside the Gandhara seated Maitreya in the showcase!
